What Is PF Return Filing?

PF return filing converts approved payroll into member-wise statutory wage and contribution information through EPFO's Electronic Challan-cum-Return workflow.

Accuracy depends on much more than totals. UAN, joining and exit dates, paid days, NCP days, EPF/EPS/EDLI wages, contribution splits and payment evidence should agree with HR, payroll and accounts.

Current ECR control: return filing and payment are distinct steps. A generated challan is not the same as successful payment and closure.

01What is PF return filing?

Employers covered under the EPF framework furnish member-wise monthly wage and contribution information through the Electronic Challan-cum-Return workflow and complete the related payment and records.

02What information is required for ECR?

The current file and portal workflow uses member identity or UAN, wages relevant to EPF, EPS and EDLI, member and employer contributions, NCP days and other prescribed data.

03Is payroll gross salary the same as PF wages?

Not necessarily. Statutory wage treatment depends on the law, scheme and employee facts. Payroll components should be mapped rather than copying gross salary into every ECR wage field.

04How are new employees included in PF return?

Prior UAN and membership, joining date, identity and wage details should be reviewed before onboarding. Existing UAN should be linked where applicable to avoid duplicate service records.

05What should be done when an employee leaves?

Reconcile final payroll and contribution, then update the correct date and reason of exit through the applicable portal process. Preserve supporting HR records.

06Can an ECR be revised?

The revamped ECR provides revision or supplementary functionality subject to portal conditions and validations. Corrections need source evidence, approval and differential-payment tracking.

07What happens if PF return or payment is delayed?

Delay can create interest, damages and compliance or employee passbook issues. The exact consequence depends on period, amount, facts and current relief or extension.

08Does filing ECR complete monthly compliance?

A complete close also requires successful payment, accounting reconciliation, joining and exit updates, exception follow-up and preservation of return, challan, TRRN and bank evidence.
