GSTR-2B and Input Tax Credit Reconciliation
Reconcile purchase records, supplier reporting and eligibility before claiming input tax credit.

Reconcile purchase records, supplier reporting and eligibility before claiming input tax credit. Use the sections below to understand the practical decisions, records and compliance points before taking action.
Portal data is not the only test
GSTR-2B is an important statement for supplier-reported documents, but credit also depends on statutory eligibility, possession of tax invoice, receipt, payment to government and other conditions.
Build invoice-level matching
Compare vendor GSTIN, invoice number, date, taxable value and tax between purchase register and portal data. Separate matched, missing, duplicate, excess, ineligible and reverse-charge items.
Review blocked and personal credits
Do not claim credit merely because an invoice appears in portal data. Check blocked credits, non-business use, exempt supplies, place of supply, time limits and document validity.
Communicate mismatches to suppliers
Share precise discrepancy details with vendors and track corrections in subsequent GSTR-1 or amendment periods. Avoid informal edits that make books and vendor records diverge.
Reverse credit where conditions fail
Payment, use, cancellation, credit notes or other events may require reversal or re-availment according to law. Keep a period-wise ITC movement schedule.
Preserve reconciliation evidence
Retain purchase register, GSTR-2B downloads, vendor follow-up, eligibility notes, reversal workings and final credit claimed in GSTR-3B.
